Contemporary New-Build Garden Design & Build in Midlothian:
Designed to connect the house and garden, every view, structure and planting decision was carefully considered to transform an exposed new-build plot into a calm, private and purposeful outdoor living space.
This south-west facing new-build garden in Midlothian was designed to overcome the familiar challenges of poor soil, limited privacy and an exposed, uninspiring site.
Our brief was to create a garden that looked elegant, felt established and was truly usable from the outset, combining a series of stylish outdoor rooms for everyday living, entertaining and relaxing.
The design combines premium natural materials with strong architectural structures, creating distinct zones within the garden: a wellness area, a dining patio, and a generous outdoor lounging space with oversized furniture chosen for relaxing and socialising.
Scottish larch was used for the bespoke pergola and our contemporary interpretation of a series of arches spanning a connecting walkway, introducing boldness, vertical rhythm and cohesion throughout the garden. These structures draw you from the house and dining terrace towards the main lounging area, while framing the view of the multi-stem Amelanchier and its underplanting at the end of the avenue.
To soften the architectural lines and give the garden an established feel from the very beginning, we invested in mature specimen planting, including Betula, pleached trees and multi-stem umbrella Amelanchier. Clipped evergreen spheres, ornamental grasses, herbaceous perennials and seasonal planting are woven throughout the borders and wrap around the garden room, bringing texture, movement and year-round interest while visually linking each area of the garden.
The all-important views from inside the home were carefully considered, with planting wrapping around the garden room and its cathedral windows, while strategically positioned focal trees create beautiful outlooks from the principal living spaces and seating areas.
A raised clay brick planter, built to stand the test of time, adds height and another layer of interest to the rear terrace, creating the feeling of being immersed in planting. As the surrounding development progresses, the pleached trees will form a contemporary green screen, enhancing privacy from neighbouring properties while adding another layer of structure and softness to the garden.
Lighting formed an integral part of the design, creating warmth and atmosphere while preventing the "black mirror" effect often experienced when looking out from the house after dark. Uplighters accentuate the striking white bark of the Betula 'Doorenbos' and the graceful form of the multi-stem Amelanchier 'Lamarckii', while discreet downlights within the pergola softly illuminate the structure. A consistent warm colour temperature has been used throughout the lighting scheme to create a cohesive evening ambience.
Bespoke storage was designed and commissioned through one of our trusted craftspeople, complementing the clean architectural aesthetic while ensuring the garden remains every bit as practical as it is beautiful.
The result is a contemporary, design-led garden that feels calm, considered and connected — a lasting investment that transforms a typical new-build plot into a series of elegant outdoor living spaces.
